A major portion of the book is about this operation, which had to be conducted in secret, since public awareness could easily have meant widespread panic. In a moment, we’ll hear Barbara in her own words. Barbara wrote more than 20 books, beginning in 1969 with Long March, Short Spring: The Student Uprising at Home and Abroad, a book about antiwar protests she co-wrote with her first husband, John Ehrenreich. She later founded the Economic Hardship Reporting Project. I'm really not too psyched about humanity being screwed up because it was a malfunctioning hive-mind. ![]() What a crock, right?Ĭoville avoids that, what he does do though just seems like the terrifying end of a book like 'Childhood's End' given a positive spin. Aw, he forgives his daddy, I guess we won't blow up your planet after all. Humanity always gets saved though by some last-minute act of love or forgiveness. Death and famine versus art and non-lethal sciences. The case against was (and is) pretty solid from that perspective. Remember those old Sci-Fi movies and episodes of the Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits where the Earth was held hostage by aliens? Some smug being in a silver jumpsuit or robe would lecture the assembled group of humans about humanity's lust for war and willful neglect of the starving and the poor, etc. The other 'My Teacher' books go into some deep waters with troubled homes, abuse begetting abuse, and the value of strong music programs in our schools, but Coville goes all out here. Who does Bruce Coville think he is? I remembered there being some heavy stuff in this book, but I completely forgot about that ending. ![]() ![]() ![]() Title: Now or Never Item Condition: used item in a very good condition. I'm still in those two minds about this one, provided by netgalley, but here's what I liked. Is it going to spend the whole time trying to prove that non-stick-thin women really can have romance too? (Answer: do we really need to write a whole Fat Girl Romance sub-genre to confirm the bleedin' obvious?) Is it going to go on and on and on about the heroine's self-image issues related to her size? (Answer: show me any woman of any size or body shape who doesn't have issues related to appearance.) In other words, is this going to be a romance or a self-help book? The appeal of returning to a Batman-centric world appealed to Dini because he had a rare opportunity to craft new mythology for the character. Dini specifically mentioned that work on All-Star Batman & Robin had been suggested, though ultimately that title would pass on to Frank Miller. According to Dini and Dan Didio, the two had been in talks for quite some time regarding a possible Batman project. Working on Detective was something that had been in the works for quite some time. In his mind, being a superhero would need that same element or personality trait. ![]() The creator noted that professions such as firefighting or police work needed a sense of humor to escape the weight of the task at hand. "Bruce Wayne needs a sense of humor to do his job… Batman, for a very long time, was going to a very dark place," said Dini. The introduction of Bruce Wayne to Detective (as well as Grant Morrison's sister title Batman) has humanized both the book but also the character of Batman. "Batman is the edge or scary image for Bruce to use." The writer highlighted his decision to have Wayne doing a lot more investigative work and only bringing out Batman when necessary. "You don't have a Batman without Bruce Wayne," said Dini. One of the biggest changes was focusing on Bruce Wayne again. This involved shifting the focus of Detective. Dini emphasized that he was looking to return to an older style of storytelling during his run on the title. ![]() |
